These healthy crispy baked chicken wings are crispy on the outside and tender on the inside! With three different flavours; Lemon Pepper, Honey Mustard and Chinese Five Spice – they’re perfect for meal prepping and game night!
I have been teasing you guys with this recipe for quite some time on my Insta stories and promising you my secret recipe. Well, the wait is finally over and I promise you it was worth it! I’m finally sharing how to make the crispiest chicken wings with not just 1 but 3 delicious mouth-watering flavours.
Fresh & Local
Now when it comes to ingredients and grocery shopping, I like to look for fresh and local whenever I can. Earlier this week I picked up some fresh ingredients at the local farmers market to add some freshness and spice to these recipes. I love that it’s summer and the markets are bursting with fresh produce from all the farmers. I’m lucky to live in Southern Ontario where we have access to so much locally produced food. Buying local is important to me because I love supporting local farmers and businesses. I know that my produce is fresh and that it hasn’t traveled thousands of miles, and let’s not forget tasty!
Quality Meat
Even when it comes to my meat like chicken, I want to know where it’s coming from. That’s why I’m choosing Maple Lodge Farms ® – Fresh From The Farm Chicken. I love that their chicken is always fresh, grain-fed, raised on local Ontario farms by Canadian Farmers and that they are a family-run company. Their chicken is also super accessible and available at most of my local grocery stores like Food Basics, Walmart, Real Canadian Superstore and Loblaws.

To say that Mr. Matt and I LOVE chicken wings would be an understatement! They are pretty much on a regular rotation. Most people would categorize chicken wings on the naughty list, but I wanted to show you that you can make them healthy while still maintaining flavour. I love that I can just make a double batch and meal prep these for the week to have with a side of mashed potatoes, roasted broccoli or even a huge kale salad like my Apple Bacon and Kale Salad.
I’ve made so many flavours of chicken wings, but these three flavours are our top favourites:
Lemon Pepper
With only 4 ingredients, they have a fresh lemon burst of flavour with a pop pf peppery flavour.
Honey Mustard
Tangy, sweet and saucy for the honey mustard lover in your family.
Chinese Five Spice
A warm and savoury flavour with a touch of anise and cinnamon. I feel like it’s an underrated spice. Mr. Matt introduced me to it years ago when he used to make his massive stir-fries and this was his go-to spice! All these flavours are super yummy, finger-licking good and oh so hard to resist. You won’t believe that they are not deep-fried – because we’ll have none of that in the HealthNut Kitchen! Below you will find a list of my tips and tricks to make the crispiest healthiest chicken wings. So the secret is out!
Let me know in the comments below which of the 3 flavours you are most excited to try!
Recipe
Lemon Pepper Wings
With only 4 ingredients, they have a fresh lemon burst of flavour with a pop pf peppery flavour.
If using frozen wings, make sure they are thawed and pat dry with a paper towel.
In a large bowl, toss the wings with half the lemon juice, half the lemon zest, salt and pepper.
Prepare a wire rack placed on top of a baking tray and spray with avocado or coconut oil to prevent sticking.
Arrange the chicken wings side by side on the wire rack, making sure not to overcrowd them.
Bake for 25 minutes, turn and bake for another 15 to 20 minutes until crispy and golden.
Remove and toss with remaining lemon juice and lemon zest.
Garnish with lemon zest and fresh cracked black pepper.
Notes
Tips for making extra crispy wings:1. Thaw the night before in the fridge so there’s no extra moisture from being frozen. 2. Pat dry so skin crisps up and oil and seasoning sticks 3. Bake on a wire rack set over top of the baking tray so the air flows around the wings and gets everything super crispy. 4. Don’t overcrowd otherwise you won’t get an even crisp and some of the pieces will be soggy.

In a large bowl, toss the wings with sea salt and black pepper.

Arrange the chicken wings side by side on the wire rack, making sure not to overcrowd them.
Bake for 25 minutes, turn and bake for another 15 to 20 minutes until crispy and golden.
While the wings are baking, prepare the sauce. In a small bowl, combine dijon mustard, honey, yellow mustard, mayo, worcestershire sauce, garlic powder and onion powder. Set aside.
Remove wings and toss the wings with the honey mustard sauce until evenly coated.

These look great! Do you add any oil to the 5 spice wings? Do you oil then add the seasoning?
