Custard Yogurt Toast: #TikTokMadeMeMakeIt

A delicious, high protein breakfast or dessert made with simple ingredients. This custard yogurt toast recipe is TikTok famous, and for good reason!

This easy, creamy, crunchy breakfast toast has been blowing up the internet, and I can totally see why! Think of a warm cheesecake custard-y center baked in toast with berries. I know, I’m drooling already too! It looks so delicious, and it’s actually a pretty healthy breakfast. You’ve got your protein in there with the egg and yogurt. There’s a little vanilla in there too, and it’s really customizable because you can add whatever you want on top! Although I still prefer a good old French Toast this is a fun one to try and might just be your new weekend brunch favourite! This recipe has been circling around the internet but the video I found was by Cooking With Ayeh, and you can check out her TikTok right here.

How to make Custard Yogurt Toast

This twist on breakfast toast is made with really simple ingredients. All you need to create the custard filling are eggs, plain greek yogurt, maple syrup and vanilla extract. These ingredients together give it a sweet yet subtle caramel and vanilla taste with a slight tang. The best part is it only takes 15 minutes to bake. The traditional recipe is made in an air fryer, but if you don’t have one, don’t worry! I don’t have one either! I’ve included instructions for the oven below.

Top Tips for Custard Yogurt Toast

  • Choosing which bread to use – You can use any kind of bread for this recipe, but I’d suggest getting pre-sliced bread that’s extra soft. This will make it easier to smoosh down and give you that French toast vibe. I’d also suggest avoiding bread with large holes such as sourdough, since the custard filling will end up leaking through the holes. No one wants that kind of mess to clean up!
  • Getting the texture of the custard right – You want to make sure you’re not putting too much of the custard mixture onto the bread. If you use a really thick layer, the bread will brown before the custard is cooked all the way through.
  • Experiment with toppings – I love how customizable this recipe is. You can put whatever you want on top! I opted for berries, but I’ve seen people adding chocolate chips, icing sugar and honey, and experimenting with spices like nutmeg and cinnamon.

Instructions:

  • Preheat the oven to 350F.
  • In a medium mixing bowl add in plain greek yogurt, crack in an egg, add the maple syrup and vanilla extract and whisk until smooth.
  • Using your fingers or the back of a large spoon, press down on the middle of your slices of bread to create a little pool in the center for the custard to fill.
  • Pour the custard into the bread pools, dividing the mixture evenly between the two slices.
  • Drop your chosen toppings into the custard such as berries (I used frozen).
  • If using an airfryer, cook for 4-5 minutes. If using the oven, cook for 12-15 minutes, or until the custard center sets (it should jiggle as a whole but not ripple when moved) and starts to caramelize slightly.
  • Enjoy warm with a drizzle of maple syrup!
