Healthy Gingerbread Smoothie

This healthy gingerbread smoothie is a must for this time of year. It’s creamy and sweet with a hint of holiday spice – basically a gingerbread cookie in a smoothie!

If you’ve been here for a while, you’ll know I love my smoothies. They don’t call me the smoothie queen for no reason! But when it comes to smoothies, it’s all too easy to make the same thing over and over again. This time of year I love to mix it up with tons of creative holiday flavours. And what screams Christmas more than gingerbread cookies? This smoothie is literally Christmas in a drink, and the perfect excuse to have cookies for breakfast!

The perfect Christmas smoothie

I know smoothies might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Christmas drinks, but this is definitely a holiday favourite of mine! I’m not joking when I say it tastes like a cookie! It’s sweet (but not too sweet) with just a hint of warm holiday spice from the ginger and allspice. It also has sneaky cauliflower added to balance out the sweetness and add a creamy texture, and one of my favourite protein powders. It doesn’t matter the day, season or how busy I am, I always make time for fuelling my body!

Why use molasses in a smoothie?

Christmas is the time of the year when I bust out the sticky jar of blackstrap molasses hidden in the back of the cupboard. I just feel like this nutrient rich sweetener doesn’t get enough love! Alone, it can have a bitter sweet tang, but added into cookies, breads, pancakes and (in this case) a smoothie is the best way to let that unique molasses flavour shine. There’s nothing quite like it. I’ve been looking for ways to enjoy it outside of the classic Gingerbread men cookies, and whipping it up in a high speed blender with some yummy smoothie ingredients is the perfect alternative!

I normally don’t add sweeteners into my smoothies, but molasses is not just a natural sweetener! It’s packed with minerals like manganese, copper, potassium, calcium, magnesium and selenium. Plus, it’s also high in iron! I think of it as a supplement that also happens to taste like Christmas.
