This DIY Belly Oil for Pregnancy and Postpartum is an easy and nourishing homemade serum that will be essential for your pregnancy skincare routine! Infused with essential oils such as lavender, geranium, blue tansy, frankincense, and gentle baby.

If you’re a Mama, or a Mama-to-be, you may be familiar with that stretching, itchy and tight skin that comes with having a growing belly! There are many products out there that claim to prevent stretch marks and reduce irritation. But, many contain toxic ingredients such as parabens, mineral oil, or PEG compounds and a pregnant Mama, I do my best to avoid these kinds of ingredients. So when it came to picking out a nourishing belly oil or balm, I was a little disappointed with the options. As I was browsing through belly balms, I noticed that the active ingredients in most cases were pure essential oils.Β

With that in mind, I decided to make my own DIY Belly Oil for Pregnancy and Postpartum using just a few simple ingredients. This way I know exactly what I’m putting onto my skin, and the essential oils I’m using are 100% pure and therapeutic grade! This DIY belly oil is super simple to make and whether you’re pregnant or not, you can use this as a night time facial and body oil and wake up with baby soft hydrated, glowing skin.

Jojoba Oil

There are many pregnancy safe oils that you could use for this recipe, which are also supportive for your skin. I chose to use organic jojoba oil as the base or β€œcarrier oil” because it doesn’t clog pores, and moisturizes the skin without being greasy. Jojoba oil helps to prevent irritation, and encourages collagen synthesis. I have used jojoba oil in my natural skincare routine for years, in my oil cleanser, as an eye makeup remover and the base for my glow face oil.Β

This DIY belly oil for pregnancy and postpartum will help to encourage elasticity, reduce dryness and tightness and help calm and soothe. It won’t necessarily prevent stretch marks from happening, but I find that it feels really nice and helps to support and nourish your pregnant body.

Essential Oils

Lavender

It should come as no surprise that the first essential oil in this blend is lavender! Lavender is the β€œswiss army knife” of essential oils. It acts as a nervine and calmative to help enhance relaxation, reduces the appearance of blemishes, and helps to support aging skin. Lavender is my go-to for headaches, calming the mind, and I use it in any DIY skincare products I make!

Sacred Frankincense

Sacred frankincense essential oil comes from Boswellia sacra tree resin, and is very similar to regular frankincense – which comes from Boswellia carteri. Sacred frankincense is especially high in alpha-pinene, a naturally occurring chemical constituent in this essential oil which gives it such amazing therapeutic properties. Sacred frankincense can be used topically to to relieve minor skin irritation, cuts, bruises & burns. It is amazing for promoting health cell regeneration, and a must-have for any skincare products.Β

Geranium

Geranium essential oil is another skincare fave. This floral oil is one that is newer to me, as I don’t tend to reach for floral scents on a regular basis. That being said, I was pleasantly surprised that it doesn’t smell too strong or overpowering! Geranium is both uplifting and balancing and includes the naturally occurring constituents citronellol and geraniol, and is an important ingredient in many skin care products. It helps to help maintain the appearance of tender, soft skin!

Gentle Baby

Gentle baby is a blend of geranium, coriander, palmarosa, lavender, ylang ylang, roman chamomile, lemon, jasmine, and rose. It is nourishing for the skin, and has calming properties to help soothe both baby and Mama! I will definitely be diffusing this one when Baby Acorn arrives – either by diffusing a few drops in her nursery, or adding a few drops to my chest as she feeds to help calm her.Β

Blue Tansy

The last ingredient in this DIY belly oil is my favourite: blue tansy!Β  The naturally occurring constituent chamazulene turns this powerfully pure essential oil a beautifully rich blue colour during the steam distillation process. It smells like a combination of chamomile, and blueberries… so you can’t go wrong with adding this to any oily blend! Blue tansy helps to soothe and moisturize the skin, while reducing redness and irritation. This essential oil is on the pricier side, so I saved up my essential rewards points (which I earn from my monthly order from Young Living) to get my bottle and let me tell you a little goes a very long way! It is optional to include in this blend, but this is what gives this belly oil the beautiful blue hue.

The quality of essential oils you use is very important! Many people don’t realize this, and often use lesser quality oils that are cut with synthetics and diluted. 1. Blue tansy is generally not regarded as safe during pregnancy. Although it is a nice color and has a lovely smell, it can be used to induce abortions and uterine contractions, so I would be very wary of recommending this.

  2. Ahhh I can’t wait to make this! I’m just about to enter my 2nd trimester, so I’ll be slathering this allll the time. I’m wondering if there’s another oil substitute for Blue Tansy that you would recommend? I would love to be able to get it, but $$ is even more precious now that we are expecting!

    • Hi Shayla! So glad to hear – and congratulations! I hope you are feeling good in your second trimester. For sure -you can either just eliminate the blue tansy (I know it is pricy) or swap it for roman chamomile – a great smelling oil which is nourishing for your skin and also has calming properties. Enjoy, and be sure to tag me and share a photo on social media when you make it!

      • Is there a good substitute for gentle baby in this mix? I have all of the other oils except gentle baby.
