If you are a female with a period, then you most likely deal with the lovely reality of a visit from Mother Nature every month. This is a topic that I am very passionate about and I am so happy to share my tips with you – I hope they make a difference!

Whether or not you have cramps, having your period isnโ€™t the most pleasant thing. But, it is something thatโ€™s healthy to have and there are things that you can do to support you body during this time of the monthโ€ฆ and of course make it a little more bearable!ย

Use a Silicone Menstrual Cup

I know the concept of a period cup or menstrual cup may sound really weird if youโ€™ve never heard of it. But, they are actually really easy to use and have changed my life when Iโ€™m on my period.ย

A menstrual cup is an alternative to tampons that is reusable, and collects your flow instead of absorbing it. Conventional options such as pads and tampons are bleached with chemicals and harmful toxins (some pads are even loaded with synthetic scents)! Tampons are also very drying and irritating, whereas cups do not absorb any moisture so they are often much more comfortable.ย

Using a silicone menstrual cup also reduces waste! Swapping disposables for a reusable menstrual cup is going to keep a lot of waste out of landfills, while also saving you money in the long run because you wonโ€™t have to purchase pads or tampons every month.ย

Heating Pad

I love using a heating pad (either a bean bag, or hot water bottle works well) on my lower stomach. It really helps to ease cramps and take your mind off the pain. If there was ever a time to curl up with a heating pad, cup of tea and Netflix – now is it! Remember, sometimes itโ€™s ok to slow down and do nothing. And on your period you definitely have permission to Netflix and chill!ย

Use Essential Oilsย

As I mentioned before, I get excruciating cramps (and I know Iโ€™m not alone)! Using essential oils has really helped to ease the pain of my cramps, while also promoting healthy hormones. The blend that I love for PMS and during my period is called Dragon Time. It contains a blend of fennel, clary sage, lavender, marjoram, yarrow and jasmine. Clary sage contains natural phytoestrogens, making it the perfect choice for supporting your emotions during that time of the month. You can apply it topically directly to your belly, and add a drop to your wrists and inhale the aroma to help you feel more grounded and balanced.ย

I also love using deep relief, peppermint, or panaway on my stomach when cramps are really bad. And of course, I am constantly diffusing essential oils as well! Some of my favourites to diffuse during my period to help boost my mood are: peace & calming, valor, lavender, and orange.ย

I canโ€™t imagine how I would get through my period without these essential oil blends, they are truly life (and period) savers! Take a Relaxing Bath

Thereโ€™s something so soothing about stepping into a hot bath with essential oils and bath salts. I love using this blend of calming bath salts infused with lavender essential oil to help relax and unwind. Epsom salts contain magnesium, which can help to relax your muscles and reduce cramping during your cycle.ย

Track Your Period ย

I highly recommend using an app or even a journal to track your period. I use the app Cycles – itโ€™s really easy to use and helps to give you a heads up on when your period is expected so that you can be prepared! I think this really helps you to be in the know and be informed about your monthly cycle. Some apps such as My Flo even have recommendations as to how to support your body throughout the month. I also like that you can track your symptoms such as hot flashes, how heavy your flow is, headaches, breakouts and more. Over time, this can help to indicate hormonal imbalances, and get to the root of it.

Drink Relaxing Herbal Tea

I love enjoying a cup of soothing herbal tea to help with cramps, digestion and relaxation on my period. It can even help boost your mood! Some of my favourites are chamomile + lavender, ginger, tulsi, sleepy time, or red raspberry leaf.ย

Eat For Your Cycle

Speaking of hormone balance, I recently read the book Woman Code by Alissa Vitti! I highly recommend grabbing a copy or listening to the audiobook. Alissa talks about supporting your body during your period by eating foods rich in iron and omega 3 fatty acids. Some examples would be: dark leafy greens: kale, spinach, swiss chard, sardines, salmon, seaweed, and bone broth. Check out this article by Alissa Vitti on the best foods to eat when you are on your period (and want to feel good)!

Natural Hygiene Wipes

Natural hygiene wipes such as these are super helpful and refreshing when youโ€™re on your period. They are a great way to freshen up after you use the washroom. If youโ€™re on the go you can throw these in your purse – they are a great thing to have on hand for emergencies! If you use a menstrual cup itโ€™s unlikely youโ€™ll have to empty it in a public washroom since you can leave it in for 10-12 hours. But if you did, these would be a life saver!

Supplement With Ginger

Ginger is such a good supplement to keep in your medicine cabinet. It can help reduce nausea, is a powerful anti-inflammatory (great for headaches), and decreases bloating and relieves digestive upset. On top of all that, it has also been proven to help relieve dysmenorrhea (painful period cramps). This is the ginger supplement I have been using lately. Alternatively if you don’t have ginger capsules on hand, you can always blend some fresh ginger into a delicious green smoothie that is packed with dark leafy greens and healthy fats!

Try Acupunctureย

This is something new Iโ€™ve been doing for the past year. Acupuncture has so many therapeutic properties and benefits! I mostly get facial acupuncture which is great for reducing fine lines and wrinkles. But, my acupuncturist has also told me about the benefits of acupuncture for relieving painful cramps and digestive upset around your period, so this is something that I plan to experiment with more in the future!ย
